CO-OPERATIVE

//OBSERVE & APPROPRIATE

Located within the now derelict and disused Co-Operative Department store on London Road in Brighton, the brief was centred around the basis of tight and loose space. The basement area within the large department store was the focus of the design, in which a creative hub could be inserted dependant on the programmatic issues and initial site research and exploration.

The creative hub and subsequent design evolved into a performance space in which classes could take place. This space would also be available to professional groups, as well as amateurs, to rehearse and use as a meeting point; taking in dancers, contemporary performers and performance artists. Performances could occur, with the interior space offering positions and perches to view and observe, sit and watch. Glimpses of what is happening beyond spaces allow for a sense voyeurism and intrigue to enable the building to lead you through the spaces; both tight and loose. This is achieved through both material and physical boundaries.
